Before Christmas a team of McCabe Ford Williams quizzers successfully took part in the Kent Branch of the Chartered Institute of Credit Management’s Challenge Shield, taking part in the Institute’s Wine and Wisdom Quiz Night.

Entered as Team BATJAK (an acronym of the team members) the MFW quizzers comprised of Amanda Ireland, Partner, and Alison Collier, Associate, both of our Sittingbourne office together with Trevor Ingram, MFW Practice Manager and Julian Sadik, Payroll Manager, and a member of our Herne Bay office. Last, but by no means least, the team was completed by Amanda’s husband Bill.

Rounds included food & drink, music, sports and the ever ubiquitous general knowledge round. The team performed well in most rounds and were, for most of the evening, managing to secure 2nd or 3rd spot. However, in the final round, Team BATJAK ‘pulled out a blinder’ scoring an impressive additional 27 points (on the subject of guessing the correct year for each named event – well they are good with numbers, after all), securing first place and beating last year’s champions – Team GB from TG Baynes Solicitors.

Amanda Ireland, as Team Captain was delighted with the team’s success and, in particular, was proud to take part in an event which helped to raise a marvellous £610 for charity. As the winning Team Captain it fell to Amanda to nominate a charity to receive this amount and she duly selected The Alzheimer’s Society as worthy recipients.

A taste for knowledge?

There were a few surprising questions during the night, even for the more seasoned quizzers amongst the team, but perhaps the most baffling was to describe all FIVE taste sensations. This question seemed to catch most people out on the night who could easily account for the salt, sweet, sour and bitter tastes but were stumped to name the fifth. For those of you who have yet to come across this fifth sensation, or should we say, be able to name it, the fifth taste sensation is called Umami and is derived from the Japanese word meaning a pleasant and savoury taste and which is, apparently, distinguishable from salt.

So, having gained a renewed taste for knowledge (Japanese or otherwise), let’s now see if Team BATJAK can defend the Shield later this year?
